The VAE (Validation des Acquis de l’Expérience) is an academic assessment framework comparable to examinations and other forms of university evaluation. It is designed to assess the knowledge, competencies, and professional expertise required for the award of university credits or even a full academic degree. The origins of the VAE can be traced back to 1985 with the introduction of the French VAP (Validation des Acquis Professionnels). The modern VAE system was formally institutionalized under French law in 2002, providing universities with a legal framework through which academic recognition may be granted on the basis of professional and life experience.

Today, the VAE model has been adopted in several European countries, including Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Andorra, Belgium, and Finland. In the United States, comparable approaches have traditionally existed under the more limited concept of RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning).

The VAE, together with its Anglo-Saxon counterpart VPL (Validation of Prior Learning), represents a modern and forward-looking approach to higher education, fully aligned with the realities and demands of the twenty-first century. The French University of America recognizes and applies this legitimate academic framework, which has formed part of contemporary higher education practices for more than two decades.

The fundamental principle underlying the VAE is that professional achievement and life experience can produce substantial, measurable, and academically relevant knowledge. As Albert Einstein famously observed: “The only source of knowledge is experience.”
